The Importance of Grout Care in Tile Cleaning

Grout is made of a few different materials. There is epoxy grout, sanded, and un-sanded grout. Regardless of the type of grout you're working with, there are universal traits that all grout has. First off, grout is prone to staining, because of its porous nature.

Dirt and grime are the usual culprits, particularly in high traffic areas such as hallways and foyers. In the kitchen, however, spills are a big problem. In bathrooms, tile cleaning is complicated because of mold, mildew and soap scum. What can you do to clean your tile?

With any tile cleaning project, start with the mildest cleaning solutions. When in doubt about a cleanser, test it in a hidden spot—behind or under an appliance, for example. That way if there is any adverse reaction, you know not to use that solution further. Start with plain water and a stiff-bristled brush; . Simply spray warm water on the grout lines and scrub in a circular motion, then let them dry naturally.

Taking care of your grout is more important than it just looking good.  If grout starts to stain, there may be germs in the grout itself, particularly if it hasn't been sealed.  In addition, some bacteria can start to erode the grout.  This can lead to gaps in the grout lines and even worse, gaps under the tiles themselves.  With that said, grout cleaning and care is as important as tile cleaning.

Grout does more than just delineating your tiled surface. Grout is actually under the edges of the tile, acting as a cushion, or perhaps a more accurate description, a shock-absorber. If there are any gaps under the tile, over time, the tile will start to develop invisible micro-fractures. These get worse, until finally you hear the sound you dread the most with an expensive tile floor: CRACK. With a simple terracotta or saltillo floor, one tile is very much like another. It is merely a matter of matching the shade and style and you can replace that tile, but what about something like an elegant Spanish porcelain tile with an ornate pattern, or an imported marble floor? You may have to get a new floor or rip out an entire section at least.
