Tile Cleaning Tips:  What to Do

Here are several tile cleaning tips to consider.  First off, here are the things that are safe where tile cleaning is concerned.  Damp mopping is fine.  Using a pH neutral cleaning solution such as dish washing soap is also fine.  If you're going to damp mop, a good way to do it is to  get a spray bottle and mix about 2-3 teaspoons of dish washing soap into a full bottle of water.  Spray a floor lightly and use a completely dry mop to mop it clean.  Another thing that is safe to do is to sweep your floor.
Use a straw bristled brush and lightly sweep your floor once a week.  If you wish to use a shop vac or other form of vacuum cleaner, that's also fine, however, make sure that any attachments do not have any surfaces that may scratch up your tile.  Remove or lift any roller bars.  A dust-mop or soft bristled brush can be used as well to clean your floor.  Just make sure that your broom or brush isn't worn out, and like regular sweeping, clean your floor about once a week.  That pretty much covers what to do, but what about things that you should avoid when cleaning your tile?

Tile Cleaning Tips and What NOT to Do

First off, regardless of whether you have a travertine floor or ceramic tile, you want to avoid using harsh chemicals.  We see this a lot.  People will use bleach to clean their floors and never seem to realize that bleach is acid.  As for ammonia, it is a solvent.  We know what you're thinking.  Floor material is tough, particularly if it is ceramic or natural stone.  Except that something for you to consider is that stone is porous, and certain types of stone such as marble or limestone are extremely vulnerable to anything acidic.  You can literally eat away at your stone.  But what about ceramic tile?
Ceramic or porcelain tile has a protective glaze on it, however, that is where the danger lies in using harsh chemicals.  Ammonia or bleach can easily strip away the glaze from your tile and eventually start to erode the tile itself.  However it isn't just your tile you need to worry about.  There is also your grout, which we will discuss in the next part of this article.  For now, realize that calling a tile cleaning service in San Antonio may actually be your best bet.
